Third Faculty of Medicine (LF3)
Charles University Β· Prague 10, Vinohrady
Founded as part of Charles University (est. 1348), LF3 is a modern medical faculty offering a 6-year General Medicine program fully in English. Graduates earn the MUDr. degree (equivalent to MD), recognized across the EU and eligible for USMLE and US residency.
Why LF3?
LF3 is the only Prague faculty that tests just 2 subjects - no physics, no logic section. Focused prep, better results.
Your MUDr. degree lets you practice medicine anywhere in the European Union - plus you're ECFMG-eligible for the US.
Primary hospital: University Hospital Kralovske Vinohrady. Plus rotations at Hospital Na Bulovce, Thomayer Hospital, IKEM, and more.
~$111,000 for the entire 6-year degree. That's less than 2 years at most US medical schools.
Up to 25 students admitted without the entrance exam via IB, A-Levels, or SAT scores.
LF3 is specifically accredited for the study of US students - your degree is recognized for federal loan eligibility and ECFMG certification.

USMLE Timeline for IMGs
Recommended timeline for international medical graduates preparing for USMLE and residency match.
Focus on medical curriculum. Begin Step 1 study alongside coursework - the overlap with basic sciences is significant.
Take Step 1 (now pass/fail). Dedicate 3-6 months of focused prep. Resources: First Aid, UWorld, Pathoma, Sketchy.
Score competitively on Step 2 CK - this is the most important score. Arrange US clinical rotations/observerships.
Complete ECFMG certification via Pathways. Build your CV, personal statement. Secure strong LORs.
Submit ERAS application. Apply broadly as an IMG - 50-100+ programs depending on specialty.
Schedule and attend interviews. Prepare with mock interviews. Send thank-you notes.

Tips for IMG Applicants
Practical advice from physicians who matched as IMGs.
π₯ US Clinical Experience
US clinical experience (observerships, externships, clinical rotations) is crucial for IMGs. It demonstrates familiarity with the US healthcare system and provides opportunities for strong LORs. Aim for 3-6 months of US experience, ideally in your target specialty.
π¬ Research
Research publications strengthen your application significantly. Even case reports or poster presentations count. Look for research opportunities through your medical school, US hospitals, or online collaborations. Aim for at least 1-3 publications or presentations.
π Letters of Recommendation
Strong LORs from US-based physicians carry the most weight. During your clinical rotations, build genuine relationships with attendings. Ask for letters well in advance (2-3 months). A letter from a department chair or program director in your specialty is especially valuable.
π Visa Considerations
Most IMG residents train on J-1 or H-1B visas. J-1 is more common and easier to obtain through ECFMG sponsorship but requires a 2-year home country return (with waiver options). H-1B requires employer sponsorship. Filter programs on Residency Explorer by visa sponsorship availability.
π― Application Strategy
Apply broadly - IMGs should target 50-100+ programs depending on specialty competitiveness. Focus on IMG-friendly programs (check NRMP data for IMG match rates). Apply on day one when ERAS opens - early applications get more interview invitations. Use Residency Explorer and FREIDA to research programs.
